The X360 controller is programmed to work on Windows PCs, but relies on its own 'Xbox 360 Controller for Windows Wireless Adapter'. These can be found cheaply, second hand. They never tried implementing support for them in the past because it wasn't possible to "hide" XInput devices, therefore it was basically guaranteed you'd suffer from the double input issue (game picking both real and virtual xbox controllers).
